Lock the tablet or phone so it is only used for Ollie

When the tablet can only open the day plan, it becomes a tool for everyday life – not a way to YouTube and games. Here are two ways to do it, both on iPad and on Android tablets. The same works on iPhone and Android phones.

Two ways – feel free to use both

Lock to Ollie 2 minutes

iPad: Guided Access · Android: App pinning

  • The child cannot leave Ollie – not to the Home Screen or other apps.
  • You unlock with your own code.
  • Must be started again if the tablet restarts.

Good for: the iPad that stays in the kitchen or bedroom.

Clear the tablet 15 minutes

iPad: Screen Time · Android: Family Link

  • Games, YouTube, camera and App Store disappear.
  • On the web, only Ollie can be opened.
  • Works all the time – even after a restart.

Good for: the child’s own tablet, which should only be used for Ollie.

Our recommendation: Use both. Screen Time (or Family Link) clears the tablet, and Guided Access (or app pinning) keeps the child in Ollie.

Before you start

  • Put Ollie on the Home Screen first. Scan the child's QR code (in Ollie under Children) with the tablet, and follow the guide on the screen. On the iPad, Open as Web App must be turned on when you tap Add to Home Screen.
  • Choose a code that the child does not know. Do not use the same code that unlocks the tablet.
  • Update the tablet. The guide follows iPadOS 26 and Android 16. On other versions, the menus may have slightly different names – use the search field at the top of Settings if you cannot find an item.

iPad

Guided Access Lock to Ollie

The iPad stays in Ollie until you unlock it yourself. You turn it on once and start it with three clicks.

  1. Turn on Guided Access

    Turn on Guided Access.

  2. Choose a passcode

    Tap Passcode Settings and then Set Guided Access Passcode. You can also turn on Face ID or Touch ID, so you can unlock it straight away yourself.

  3. Open Ollie and triple-click

    Open Ollie from the Home Screen. Quickly click the top button three times – or the Home button, if your iPad has one. If a menu appears, choose Guided Access.

  4. Tap Start

    You do not need to change anything. Under Session Options, Touch must be turned on, otherwise the child cannot tap the screen. Tap Start at the top.

How to unlock: Triple-click the button, enter your code (or use Face ID), and tap End. Next time the iPad remembers your choices, so it is just three clicks. If the iPad restarts or runs out of power, you may need to start Guided Access again.

Screen Time Clear the iPad

Everything the child does not need is hidden or blocked – and online, only Ollie can be opened. It all happens under Content & Privacy.

  1. Open Screen Time

    If Screen Time is not turned on, tap App & Website Activity, and turn it on.

  2. Lock the settings with a code

    Tap Lock Screen Time Settings, and choose a four-digit passcode. Enter your Apple Account when asked – then you can reset the passcode if you forget it.

  3. Turn on Content & Privacy

  4. Only allow Ollie on the web

    App Store, Media, Web and GamesWeb Content

    • Choose Allowed Websites Only.
    • Delete the websites already listed there: Swipe left on each one and tap Delete.
    • Tap Add Website. Enter Ollie as the title and https://app.ollieapp.dk as the address.

    Now Safari – and Ollie on the Home Screen – can only open Ollie.

  5. Hide apps from the App Store

    Choose Don’t Allow. YouTube, Netflix, games and other apps from the App Store disappear from the Home Screen. They are not deleted and will come back if you turn this off again.

  6. Stop new apps and purchases

    Set installing apps and in-app purchases to Don’t Allow.

  7. Turn off Apple’s own apps

    For example, turn off Camera, FaceTime, AirDrop, Mail, Siri, iTunes Store, Books, Podcasts and Game Center.

    Leave Safari turned on. Ollie uses Safari to run. The web filter from step 4 makes sure Safari can only open Ollie.

  8. Lock passcode and account

    At the bottom under Allow Changes To: Set Passcode & Face ID and Accounts to Don't Allow.

  9. Try it out

    Go to the Home Screen and open Ollie. Then try to open another website in Safari – it should be blocked.

Some of Apple’s own apps, such as Photos, Notes and Clock, cannot be hidden with Screen Time. If you want to be completely sure the child stays in Ollie, also use Guided Access. If the iPad is signed in with your own Apple account, also turn off iCloud Photos and Messages on it.

Does the child have their own child account in Family Sharing? Then you can make the same settings from your own iPhone: SettingsScreen Timethe child’s name. With iOS and iPadOS 27, they are instead under SettingsFamilythe child’s name, and the web filter is called Approved Websites Only.

Android tablet

Ollie runs through Chrome, so Chrome must always be allowed. The menus here are from Google's own tablets – on Samsung they have slightly different names, as noted under each step.

App pinning Lock to Ollie

The tablet stays in Ollie until you unlock it with your PIN.

  1. Turn on app pinning

    Turn on Use app pinning. On Samsung, it is under Security and privacyMore security settings. You can also search for “pin” in Settings.

  2. Require a PIN to unlock

    Turn on Ask for PIN before unpinning. This requires the tablet to have a screen lock with a PIN.

  3. Pin Ollie

    Open Ollie from the Home Screen. Swipe up from the bottom and hold your finger on the screen so you see your open apps (or press the Overview/Recent button). Tap Ollie's icon at the top of the card, and choose Pin.

How to unlock: Swipe up and hold your finger on the screen – or hold Back and Overview at the same time if the tablet has buttons. Enter your PIN. After a restart, Ollie must be pinned again.

  1. Set up Family Link

    Get Family Link on your own phone, and follow the guide. Sign in on the tablet with the child's account. The tablet cannot be signed in with your own Google account at the same time.

  2. Only allow Ollie on the web

    • Enter app.ollieapp.dk.

  3. Block the other apps

    Tap each app the child should not use, and turn Allowed off, so it says Blocked. Some of the system’s own apps cannot be blocked.

    Do not block Chrome or Ollie. Ollie runs through Chrome, and the web filter from step 2 makes sure that Chrome can only open Ollie.

  4. Require approval for new apps

  5. Try it out

    It can take a few minutes for the changes to take effect. Open Ollie on the tablet, and then try another app and another website – they should be blocked.

Android 17 without a child account: Newer tablets have Child protection directly in Settings. It can block apps, but not limit Chrome to only Ollie – so use it together with app pinning.

If something goes wrong

Ollie says the page is blocked – or shows a white screen

Check that app.ollieapp.dk is on the list of allowed websites, and that it is spelt correctly. If it still does not work, turn the web filter off again – on the iPad by choosing Unrestricted under Web Content – and write to us at [email protected].

Ollie has disappeared from the Home Screen

On the iPad: Check that Safari is turned on under Allowed Apps & Features. On Android: Check that neither Chrome nor Ollie is blocked in Family Link. The icon will come back when they are allowed again.

Why don’t you use Downtime or App Limits?

Because they also block websites, even when Safari is allowed – and Ollie is a website that is on the Home Screen. So Ollie would be blocked too.

I have forgotten the Screen Time passcode

You can reset it with the Apple Account you entered when you set the passcode. Tap Change Screen Time Passcode under Screen Time, and follow the instructions.

Does Ollie need to be updated in the App Store?

No. Ollie updates itself when the tablet is online. So it does not matter that the App Store is blocked.

Can the child get into the parent area?

Not without a login code from your email. The parent section is at the same address as the child’s app, so it is not blocked by the web filter. So do not log in to the parent section on the child’s tablet – or log out afterwards – and do not leave your mail app signed in on the tablet.

For schools and institutions

If you have many tablets, your IT department can lock them centrally with an MDM system (e.g. Jamf, Mosyle or Intune). iPads can be locked to one app with Apple’s Single App Mode – or to Safari with a web filter that only allows app.ollieapp.dk. Android tablets can be set up as dedicated devices (kiosk mode), where Ollie is installed as a web app via managed Google Play. Write to us at [email protected] if you have any questions.
